As a designer, I once worked in addiction treatment, focusing on creating healing environments where clients could build community and navigate the challenging early stages of recovery from alcohol and substance use disorders. Having been raised around alcohol misuse and experiencing a period in my life where I leaned heavily on alcohol, I can relate deeply to those grappling with these struggles. While I didn’t require formal rehabilitation, I’ve seen the importance of building the resilience to make real, enduring change. My husband continues to work directly with individuals facing these challenges every day. I've discovered my best days have always followed times when my lifestyle—especially my diet—was clean, grounding, and freeing.
Embracing a high-raw, plant-based diet has brought out the best in me, helping to cultivate clarity and resilience. At The Plant Five, we’re developing programs to work alongside treatment centers to support long-term recovery through high-raw, plant-based eating. Here’s why we believe this approach can foster lasting resolve and empowerment:
1. Early Days: Coffee, Vending Machines, and Cigarettes
In early recovery, clients often rely on quick fixes like coffee, vending machine snacks, and cigarettes to manage their transition. These habits can stabilize mood in the short term but lead to nutrient depletion and cravings that can slow healing.
Our Approach: In our programming, we offer simple, nutritious options to replace these crutches. Starting the day with a green smoothie packed with hydration, vitamins, and natural energy—like a blend of spinach, banana, and chia seeds—can provide a more balanced energy source. Research has shown that nutrient-dense foods improve focus and reduce cravings, helping clients start their day feeling grounded and energized (American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 2021).
2. Clearing the Path: How a Healthy Gut Supports Clarity
The gut plays a crucial role in mental clarity and emotional stability. Often called the "second brain," the gut produces a significant amount of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that stabilizes mood and reduces anxiety. In recovery, reducing anxiety can be essential for maintaining focus and avoiding relapse.
Our Approach: We incorporate high-raw foods rich in fiber, probiotics, and antioxidants to promote gut health. Clients enjoy options like leafy greens, fermented veggies, and fresh berries, which nourish the gut microbiome and enhance mental clarity (Frontiers in Psychiatry, 2020). A balanced gut can make the path forward more clear, helping clients stay focused and positive in their recovery journey.
3. Fueling the Body with Optimum Nutrition Reduces Cravings
Managing cravings is one of the toughest parts of recovery, often driven by the body’s search for dopamine. But cravings lose their grip when the body is receiving balanced, nutritious food.
Our Approach: High-raw foods like whole fruits, seeds, and nuts are carefully chosen in our programs to stabilize blood sugar and satisfy hunger. Research indicates that whole foods with fiber, protein, and healthy fats reduce cravings by providing sustained energy (Nutritional Neuroscience, 2019). By offering balanced, satisfying foods, we empower clients to feel nourished, reducing the urge to reach for unhealthy substitutes and building confidence in their choices.
4. Rewiring the Reward System
Long-term substance use often disrupts the brain’s reward system, which can make natural, healthy pleasures feel less satisfying. Nutrient-rich foods containing dopamine-supporting compounds like bananas, avocados, and cacao can help rebalance these pathways.
Our Approach: By introducing these dopamine-supporting foods, we guide clients to naturally reset their reward pathways. Studies show that nutrients like tyrosine and magnesium, found in many high-raw foods, aid in dopamine production and help restore natural pleasure responses (Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry, 2020). Through a balanced high-raw diet, clients begin to reconnect with authentic joy and satisfaction, making healthy choices within their new normal.
5. Long-Term Freedom: The Foundation for Lasting Change
True recovery is about achieving lasting freedom and developing a lifestyle that’s both sustainable and fulfilling. High-raw, plant-based eating fosters a positive relationship with food, encouraging mindful choices and empowerment over quick fixes.
Our Approach: We work with treatment centers to help clients experience this freedom by building habits around clean, unprocessed foods that energize and satisfy. The lifestyle we promote goes beyond diet—it’s about resilience, joy, and long-term fulfillment. With high-raw foods, clients gain tools for independence, physical health, and emotional stability, setting the foundation for a sustainable, vibrant life (International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, 2022).
